Parent Code of Conduct

Parent Code of Conduct

The Johnston United Soccer Association’s (JUSA) board members and other JUSA volunteers are committed to delivering quality youth soccer programs to the communities in Johnston County and surrounding areas. We all know children’s sports are supposed to be fun for the children involved.   Negative behaviors of coaches, parents, fans and others can have a lasting emotional effect on children. Young athletes can be disillusioned in youth sports programs because adults have unfairly taken the fun out of the game. It is understood that by registering your child in JUSA soccer, you agree to abide by the following code of conduct:

  • I will provide transportation to and from all JUSA training sessions, matches, tournaments, and events, ensuring the players are prompt, not only in arriving, but also leaving. When my son or daughter cannot make a practice or game I will, whenever possible, give the coach as much notice as possible. I also understand that training locations and times are selected by JUSA and can be changed from time to time JUSA’s discretion.
  • I will ensure my child brings all equipment to and from all soccer activities and that this equipment is worn properly. For safety reasons your son or daughter may not be allowed to practice or compete without appropriate gear.
  • I will inform the coach of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child or the safety of others.
  • I will see that my child treats other players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless of their race, color, creed, sex or ability.
  • I will promote the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of any personal desire I may have for my child to win.
  • I will encourage my child to learn and play by the laws of the game and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility, violence or other behaviors that could endanger the health or well-being of other players.
  • I, and my child, will refrain from using foul language, alcohol, drugs, nicotine or tobacco products, or any substance that in any way degrades or damages their condition of performance as an athlete and member of JUSA at any club activity unless permission has been granted by the club.
  • I will lend all players positive support and will not point out mistakes or “coach” during games and practices. I understand that it is the coach’s role to coach. I agree to allow the coaching staff of JUSA to do their job accordingly. I will approach the coach directly with questions by e-mail when possible or at a time that does not interfere with practice times or games. I also agree to adhere to JUSA’s “24 hour rule” stating that unless it is an emergency, I will wait 24 hours after an event to help to take emotion out of the situation before I bring any concerns or complaints regarding a specific event to the attention of the coach or JUSA board member.   (An example of an emergency would include something that could adversely affect an entire team or age group’s well-being. Playing time / positional discrepancies and game results are not emergencies).
  • I will follow the appropriate chain of command to resolve issues or questions relative to coaches or club policies. The appropriate route for resolving issues or questions regarding team issues is the coach, the Recreation Director, then JUSA’s Board of Directors.
  • I will always do my best not to discuss concerns or problems in public or in front of JUSA players. Concerns with other players should be discussed with the parents, coach, or Recreation Director but not with the player.
  • I will respect the coaches and officials and their authority during games and will not question, discuss or confront coaches or officials at the game field, and will take the time to speak with coaches or officials at an agreed upon time and place.
  • I will treat my player, their teammates, opponents, referees, assistant referees, all coaches, parents of all players, and all JUSA members with dignity, courtesy, respect, and sportsmanship at all times. I agree to guide my behavior by common sense principles and ethics which make all of us proud to be associated with JUSA.
  • I will maintain sideline behavior of the highest standards with no verbal or physical abuse towards anyone at any time. I understand and accept that I am personally responsible for my own actions and the actions of my child and family members at all times. I also acknowledge that if the team coach, referee, or JUSA officials believe my behavior to be inappropriate in any manner, I may face sanctioning including but not limited to not being allowed to attend matches or be present at team functions.

Inappropriate behavior is defined as, but not limited to, the following:

  • Harassment of participants, coaches, or officials
  • Use of profane language and/or gestures
  • Public threats or physical violence

Sanctioning will follow the guidelines listed here:

  • I understand that if I am asked to leave a game, I will be suspended from attending the next game to be played by my son's/daughter's team.
  • I understand that if I am asked to leave a second game during any one season. I will not be allowed to attend all the remaining regular season games and the end of season tournament.
  • I understand that the JUSA board will review all adult ejections or suspension and may extend any suspension beyond what is stated above as deemed appropriate for the offense.

Typical JUSA disciplinary actions for offenses are shown below:

  • Disrespect to an opposing player = 1 game suspension
  • Ejection from a game (first offense) = 1 game suspension
  • Ejection from a game (second offense) = 1 season suspension
  • Verbal assault/hostile challenge of a referee/coach/player = 1 year suspension from attending games
  • Physical assault/hostile challenge of a referee/coach/player = life suspension from participating in JUSA sanctioned events
